In 2025, the exhibition Wingbeat is open at the Grey Lighthouse. Every year, The Grey Lighthouse offers a new and exciting exhibition that delves into the fascinating world of birds and nature. Whether you are a bird enthusiast, nature lover or just curious, we invite you to experience Skagen's unique animal life, bird life and landscape in a different and inspiring way.

Welcome to Wingbeat

An exhibition at the Grey Lighthouse, where you get closer to one of nature's most fascinating phenomena: bird migration.

The exhibition is based on the area-specific aspect of Skagen – Denmark's northernmost point and an internationally recognized hotspot for bird migration. Where two seas, Kattegat and Skagerrak, meet, the landscape forms a natural bottleneck that attracts thousands of migratory birds – and birdwatchers from all over the world, every year.

Skagen's special location makes it one of the very best places to experience bird migration in Denmark. Every day, both experienced ornithologists and curious visitors gather to follow the birds' journey to and from their breeding and feeding places.

In Wingbeat, you learn to recognize different species, follow their incredible journeys across continents – and take a well-deserved rest, just like the migratory birds do on their journeys.

The exhibition is for the whole family, whether you are a bird enthusiast or just curious about nature.

Heavenly Portraits

Experience a living exhibition about nature and bird photography.
How do you document birdlife and how do you as a photographer get as close to your subject as possible?

Immortalizing birds as a motif requires many hours of preparation, a good hiding place, the right bait and, last but not least, an ocean of patience.

In the exhibition, Heavenly Portraits, we invite you in to experience the world of birds through the eyes of a local photographer and we take you up close to the work of the bird photographer.

An important job that not only allows us to get a closer look at the beak and feathers of the fascinating birds, but which can also give us a great deal of insight into the birds' lives and behaviour.

In the exhibition Heavenly Portraits, you can explore the wonderful world of birds through a user-engaging and sensory enriching exhibition, seen from the photographer's perspective.

Explore a photo hide-out the reedbeds and learn about the secrets behind good bird photography.

Try and see if you can count migratory birds and let loose in the activity room, where you can get even closer to the exciting birds through games, drawing exercises and photography assignments.

SAND is ever changing, drifting, beautiful, intruding, a scarce resource, a feeding chamber, a foundation, indestructible and everywhere here at the point of Skagen, Grenen. The exhibition SAND is designed by Titta Hvid in collaboration with Skagen Bird Observatory and the Danish Nature Agency.

In 2023, The Grey Lighthouse presented the unique and artistic exhibition SAND, designed by Titta Mai Hvid. The exhibition invited guests on an immersive journey into the fascinating universe of sand – from its role in nature to its connection to the bird life at the point of Skagen.

Visitors could explore sand from more than 30 different locations in the world and discover its wondrous details through a microscope.

The exhibition also offered creative activities and an insight into the bird species that live near the sand and follow the migratory routes across Skagen.

SAND was an experience that combined aesthetics, learning and the beauty of nature – a tribute to the small grains that shape landscapes and connect people and nature around the world.
